What would you consider the perfect addition to your flower garden? Are you seeking colorful flowers that bring you great delight, attract pollinators, and resist rabbits and deer? Then you might love this sampling of the 2021 Plants of the Year, as chosen by Proven Winners and the Perennial Plant Association. To be considered as a Plant of the Year a plant or shrub must thrive in multiple hardiness zones, require little maintenance, provide a long-lasting colorful display, and be somewhat resistant to pests and diseases. Bloch’s Farm has these award-winning plants and more available for you to add to your garden!
Lesser Catmint (Calamintha nepeta)- a sun-loving perennial that is not fussy about heat or drought conditions. It is low mounding and fragrant, growing up to 15 inches tall and 24 inches wide. Tiny white flowers attract pollinators and look stunning when planted along the front of a border or in a container. Lesser Catmint pairs great with coneflowers, daylilies, or shasta daisies.
‘Cat’s Pajamas’ Catmint (Nepeta sp.) – growing up to 14 inches tall and 20 inches wide, this hardy reblooming, mound-shaped perennial adds striking blue color and fragrance to your garden. It works great in border areas, prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and is heat and drought tolerant. To promote reblooming, give it a good trim in midsummer. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds love it, and so do cats!
Pugster Blue Butterfly Bush (Buddleia sp.) – is a sturdy compact variety of butterfly bush, reaching 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Despite its smaller size, it hosts full-sized blue flowers with a tiny yellowish orange dot in the center from summer to fall. It is drought tolerant and grows best in full sun.
